A Slower September – Simple Ways to Embrace a Slower Month

7 Ways to Embrace a Slower September

share /

The back-to-school rush settles in, calendars fill up, and just like that—it’s September. There’s something about this time of year that calls for a reset. We’re not quite into the holidays, but we’ve left the freedom of summer behind. It’s the perfect time to pause, reflect, and live a little more slowly on purpose.

Here are some simple ways I’m embracing a Slower September—and maybe a few will speak to you, too.

Start the Day Outside

Instead of rushing into emails or school drop-offs, perhaps begin the day with a warm drink on the porch. There’s a real calm in the cooler morning air—the kind that reminds you to just be. Even five minutes of stillness while the sun rises can help you carry that peace through the day. No phone. No to-do list. Just the remaining sounds of summer and maybe a journal in hand.

Plan a Day at the Apple Orchard

Fall fun doesn’t need to be packed with chaos. There’s something grounding about heading to an apple orchard—where the pace is slow, the snacks are sweet, and nature sets the tone. Whether it’s a quiet date or a family adventure, it’s the kind of experience that reminds you of what matters most: fresh air, connection, and time well spent.

Reset Your Closet, Reset Your Mind

As the weather cools down, I love doing a mini wardrobe shift. Bring out the cozy knits, your favorite sweatshirts, and all those warm earth tones. While you’re at it, take 30 minutes to donate anything you’re not wearing and organize by color or category. It might sound small, but creating visual calm in your space helps bring more creativity and ease into your day-to-day.

Host an Outdoor Movie Night

Not ready to say goodbye to summer evenings? Take movie night outside. Pull your TV (or a projector) onto the patio, layer on the blankets, pop some popcorn, and invite a few friends or neighbors over. Let the kids run around barefoot, or cuddle up with your partner under the stars. It’s low-key magic. The soundtrack? Cicadas and laughter.

Cook with Someone You Love

September’s produce is still thriving—and the farmers market is full of goodness. This is your sign to pick a recipe, and make a meal with someone, not just for them. Try this Whipped Ricotta Zucchini Corn Pasta or choose dish with other fresh fruit and veggies, embracing late-summer flavors.

Practice Micro-Gratitude

This season can bring a lot of friction—busy schedules, earlier bedtimes, and full inboxes. But it also offers so much beauty. Text a thank-you to a friend. Compliment a stranger. Write a note to your kid’s teacher or a coworker. These small moments of gratitude create ripples you can’t always see—but they matter.

Choose Low-Stimulation Joy

Not everything has to be a production. Say no to overstimulation and yes to gentler ways of spending your time. Wander through a local art gallery. Take a solo walk at sunset. Sit by a window with a good book. These moments are where inspiration lives—not in the noise, but in the quiet we often overlook.

September doesn’t have to be about sprinting into fall. Let it be a season of slow intention—of coming home to yourself, your routines, and your values.

Here’s to cozy mornings, crisp air, and the joy of slowing down.
